Background of the Study
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and other health complications, particularly in elderly populations. The elderly in Niger State, like other parts of Nigeria, face a high burden of hypertension, with poor management practices and limited access to healthcare contributing to its persistence (Ismail et al., 2024). Nurse-led health education programs, which focus on educating individuals about the risks of hypertension, lifestyle modifications, and the importance of medication adherence, have been shown to be effective in reducing the incidence and complications of hypertension (Olowookere et al., 2023). This review seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of such nurse-led programs in preventing hypertension and improving hypertension management among the elderly in Niger State.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of interventions for managing hypertension, the elderly in Niger State continue to suffer from high rates of undiagnosed and poorly controlled hypertension. Nurse-led health education initiatives have the potential to reduce these rates by empowering individuals to make informed decisions regarding their health. However, the effectiveness of these programs in Niger State remains unclear. This review aims to assess the impact of nurse-led health education programs on preventing hypertension and improving health outcomes for the elderly in Niger State.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led health education in preventing hypertension among elderly individuals in Niger State.
To identify the key components of successful nurse-led hypertension education programs.
To explore barriers to the implementation of nurse-led hypertension education in Niger State.
Research Questions
How effective are nurse-led health education programs in preventing hypertension in elderly individuals in Niger State?
What are the key components of effective nurse-led health education programs for preventing hypertension in Niger State?
What barriers hinder the successful implementation of nurse-led health education programs in Niger State?
Research Hypotheses
Nurse-led health education programs significantly reduce the incidence of hypertension among elderly individuals in Niger State.
Elderly individuals who participate in nurse-led health education programs demonstrate improved knowledge and management of hypertension.
The lack of resources and trained personnel significantly affects the implementation and success of nurse-led health education programs in Niger State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This review will focus on nurse-led health education programs aimed at preventing hypertension among the elderly in Niger State. Limitations include the potential lack of consistent data on the outcomes of these programs and the diversity of local contexts that might affect program implementation.
Definitions of Terms
